When tracking fashion trends, traditionally the ol’ astrolabe first turns towards two of the outer planets: Neptune, because it has a lot to say about what the collective consciousness will be resonating with, and Saturn because we have to live in the real world.
But, as designer Bob Mackie once reminded me when I was peppering him with ultra-serious questions, fashion is supposed to be fun, too!
The planet that brings a sense of optimism and a joyful spirit is Jupiter. And for the past year, it’s been in home-loving, nostalgia-ridden Cancer. This sign hangs onto every nugget of family lore, with trunks of paraphernalia harkening back to the Mesozoic era. And probably includes mother’s pearls, granny’s fox stole and Aunt Minnie’s Balenciaga.
Cancer style is quietly competent, reflecting this sign's no-nonsense approach to business. Yet soft as a moon-dappled wave lapping the shore. Designer Giorgio Armani, maestro of soft tailoring, is a Cancer.
A big shift is coming in July 2014, when Jupiter tries on Leo for size. Before you purge your closet, let’s look at some trends Jupiter in Cancer brought that you might want to hang onto:

Pajama pants. Comfort is a Cancer priority. What is cozier than wearing your jammies? This look, pioneered by Stella McCartney and Diane von Furstenberg, has come off the runways and into the streets in a big way. Comfy and figure-forgiving—what’s not to like?
Sweatshirts took over the runways for spring 2014 collections. from Kenzo to H&M to Antonio Berardi. The look is less about being sporty than just comfortable, again. To keep it fresh, opt for versions in luxe fabrics
Cocoon coats. The cocoon coat, aka the Grace Kelly or boyfriend coat, is a loose fitting silhouette, with curved shoulders and drop sleeves. It’s a demurely feminine retro shape that provides a nice warm shell against the elements. Sounds like Cancer heaven.
Iridescence. The Cancer gemstone is pearl, so anything with a soft sheen, a glimmer like moonlight dancing on waves, is right for this sign. Lanvin and Marc Jacobs showed iridescent dresses and jackets; I had my eye on an iridescent Tory Burch clutch. Warning: once Jupiter enters Leo, expect more shine and less subtlty.
Bright colors. Jupiter in Cancer helps us reclaim the joyful heart of a child. No wonder Pharrel’s “Happy” was all over the airwaves during most of its reign! Bright, clear colors have a similar effect and this spring appeared in unexpected places like lips, walls, and hair. Since it’s a trend Leo can agree with, it’s a keeper.
